Yesterday's posting turned out to be mis-titled -- it should have been "All at 6's and 7's". There are some days you just have to admit defeat. Tuesday was a massive washout for every one of our services. I think we must have been high on something when we compiled yesterday's handicaps. Thank the man upstairs it is a rare event, so onwards with a new sword to Wednesday... Or, as Scarlett would say, "Tomorrow is....."

Tiger, Tiger
The improved speed ratings once again matched the main handicap ratings. The (4) and (5) graded races for dutching are going well this week. The clear top rated of those races are showing a very healthy 50% winning strike rate.
To Friday: Is it me or are the BHB padding out the eight race cards with the worst horses in training? If you write to them about the plethora of low grade racing they show complete and utter disdain by saying things like, "We can't put on Royal Ascot and Cheltenham every day....". Proving beyond any reasonable doubt to any half-intelligent being populating this Earth that they are exasperatingly clueless. But then my name isn't Ben or any other Hooray Henry type they seem to adore............
Best at Each Meeting:
Ascot: 3-20 Shamandar
Worcester: 3-30 Gilwen Glory
Haydock: Difficult on a very lopsided card but 4-30 The Cayterers
Wolvehampton: 7-50 Global Conquest

Aw, Diddums
It is still early days but the hard work we put in to improve the strike rate of the Speed Ratings has paid off the first three days of the week. The rest of the week will tell us more, but on Tuesday they again almost matched our main handicap ratings, which themselves performed very well.
Just a word about The Owl, whose selections we began putting up yesterday. When we first put TowerForm on the net in the summer of 2002, we included The Owl as a free daily tipping service. The selections can be likened (loosely) to the Racing Post's Signpost section. But there is only one selection a day. The Owl's job is to spot possible hidden aspects in the form of a horse. The selection will be a top three rated horse on the handicap that looks good value when one or more aspects of the horse's past form points to a big run. Favourites are never selected (unless there are numerous non runners overnight), so the selection can be viewed as a win, each way, or place selection. That part will be up to whoever decides to bet the selection.
So to Wednesday:

The Owl is Not Shopping (just yet).
The revamped (improved) speed ratings performed much better on Sunday and Monday, but since Monday was very much a punters day, it is hard to tell if they have actually improved to be somewhere close to a par with the main handicaps. The rest of the week should give an initial trend one way or t'other.

Quick Update
Had a very busy day so just a quick update on Saturday to tally the full week's results. The speed ratings again lacked consistency, Saturday. On the upside, we have now (Sunday) revamped them. Thus, they should now achieve more consistent results.
We've slightly adjusted the way we compile the speed ratings, both to increase the strike rate and to improve their overall consistency. We've also adjusted the figures slightly in reaction to many emails about a ratings parity with the handicaps. The two figures for our main handicap ratings and our speed ratings are now more comparitive than before. Subscribers may have noticed for Sunday that the figures are now more closely comparable than in the past.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Saturday was 69% following Friday's 60%, Thursday's 81% , Wednesday's 63%, Tuesday's 74%, Monday's 59% and Sunday's 75% - a final weekly average of 68.7%
There were six from eight successful (4) and (5) UK graded races Saturday, giving a top two strike rate of 75% following Friday's 60% , Thursday's 89%, Wednesday's 67%, Tuesday's 83%, Monday's 40% and Sunday's 33% - a final weekly average of 63.9
The Select Pick dutching races provided a 100% strike rate, Saturday following Friday's 50%, Thursday's 100%, Wednesday's 50%, Tuesday's 100%, a disappointing Monday of two losing dutch races for a 0% return and Sunday's 50% - a final weekly average of 64.3%
The full top three summary for Saturday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Saturday was a disappointingly poor 13% following Friday's 50%, Thursday's 89%, Wednesday's 50%, Tuesday's low 33%, Monday's 30% and Sunday's 33%. Considering Saturday's bad results, it was a very acceptable final weekly strike rate of 42.5%
HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was a low 18%. Best top rated SP was 5/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 51%. Best 2nd top SP was 14/1 (Jimmy Styles)

Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 38%. Best 2nd top SP was 6/1

The Gold Cup Winner, Signor.
After the good results of Thursday came the bad results of Friday. Both sets of ratings were equally average. The upside was the fair performance of the top rated in the (4) and (5) Graded races.
On Saturday, the pinsticking Ayr card needs care. But my Gold and Silver Cup hopefuls are Prescription (2-05 Silver Cup) and Signor Peltro (3-10 Gold Cup). Both are in the kind of form needed for these tests, but they are drawn on opposite sides of the track. I rarely get overly concerned about draw bias and I don't actually think there is one at Ayr. I think the best horse on the day will win each race; not the best drawn horse. If Mac Gille Eoin handles the rising finish in the Gold Cup, he will be a big danger to all. So I am having a small each way saver on him.
Newmarket and Newbury have tidy cards. Brief Look (2-25 Newmarket) and Broomielaw (2-50 Newbury) are my across the card double tip - with Triple Aspect (3-25) and Radiohead (2-20) trebling up at Newbury.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Friday was 60% following Thursday's 81% following Wednesday's 63%, Tuesday's 74%, Monday's 59% and Sunday's 75% - an in-running weekly average of 68.7%
There were six from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races Friday, giving a top two strike rate of 60% following Thursday's 89%, Wednesday's 67%, Tuesday's 83%, Monday's 40% and Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 62.%
The Select Pick dutching races provided a 50% strike rate, Friday, following Thursday's 100%, Wednesday's 50%, Tuesday's 100%, a disappointing Monday of two losing dutch races for a 0% return and Sunday's 50% - an in-running weekly average of 58.3%

Durcan's Friday
What appeared overnight to be a very tough looking day, Thursday proved to be a stunner for all our services (yes, even including the speed ratings - but a bit early to suggest we have improved their overall consistency).

Wednesday Update
A tale of two halves, Wednesday. The main handicap ratings were very successful Wednesday afternoon, then Kempton's evening meeting came along and ruined the day - and we continue to work long hours trying to improve the disappointing top two strike rate of the speed ratings. We are getting there, slowly.
The handicap top two rated were running at well over 85% in the afternoon until Kempton reduced the rate to a measly 63%. Don't you just love all weather night racing..............

Modest Wednesday Treble
A fair day for the main handicap ratings and a 25/1 top rated stunner for the speed ratings (2nd top on the handicap) - though the consistency of the top two rated in the speed ratings are being continually worked on to get their strike rate at least close to a par with the handicaps.
A fairly dull looking Wednesday, though I'm hoping Treadwell (3-30 Sandown), Point of Light (3-45 Beverley) and Splashdown (4-30 Yarmouth) can brighten the day and provide a modestly profitable treble.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Tuesday was 74% following Monday's 59% and Sunday's 75% - an in-running weekly average of 69.3%
There were five from six successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Tuesday, giving a top two strike rate of 83% following Monday's 40% and Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 52%
The Select Pick dutching races provided a 100% dutching strike rate following a disappointing Monday of two losing dutch races for a 0% return and Sunday's 50% - an in-running weekly average of 50%
The full top three summary for Tuesday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Tuesday was another low 33% following Monday's 30% and Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 32%
HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 21%. Best top rated SP was 9/2
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 58%. Best 2nd top SP was 25/1
Top three strike rate was 68%. Best 3rd top SP was 100/30
SPEED RATINGS
Clear top rated strike rate was 32%. Best top rated SP was 25/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 37%. Best 2nd top SP was 100/30
Top three strike rate was 64%. Best 3rd top SP was 16/1
note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services). There are never more than three horses (in either service) in the top two in any race where there are joint 2nd tops (one top rated two joint 2nd top). There are never more than four horses in the top three (in either service) in any race where there are either joint 2nd or joint third tops.

Confessional Tuesday
A fairly slow start to the week and, though it's not quite the end of summer, Monday had a very autumnal feel about it. Horses going in their coats and some looking as if they have had enough of this long 2009 season. Fortunately, the main handicap ratings held up extremely well and the speed ratings looked a lot more acceptable - though improving the latter's consistency is an ongoing task.
Watch Chain proved our assessment right that his last run should be ignored handicap-wise. Though we still top rated him, it looked as though he should have been placed with a clear run. The irony is that the 2nd top rated, On The Piste, won at 33/1.
Nothing very attractive for Tuesday at first glance, but Confessional (2-30 Haydock) should continue his recent improvement and lose his maiden tag.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Monday was 59% following Sunday's 75% - an in-running weekly average of 67%
There were four from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Monday, giving a top two strike rate of 40% following Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of a very low 36.5%
The Select Pick dutching races were very disappointing Monday producing two losing dutch races for a 0% return following Sunday's successful dutching strike rate of 50% - an in-running weekly average of another very low 25%
The full top three summary for Monday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Monday was 30% following Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 31.5%

Monday Watch
Fairly good day for the main handicap ratings but the speed ratings were again disappointing.
From today I will also be logging the strike rate of the Select Pick Dutching races
On Monday, many will wonder if Watch Chain's (2-40 Redcar) form last time out is worth taking literally in this lowly nursery handicap. I would advise not. But he has shown improvement in his past three runs and even his 4th to Radio City at Brighton three runs ago puts him in the race with a good chance. He is not massive amounts in front of the handicapper, but enough in front to enable him to win. On that Radio City run he is closely matched with Val C who doesn't seem (to me) to be progressing at any great rate.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Sunday 75% - an in-running weekly average of 75%
There was one from three successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Sunday, giving a top two strike rate of 33% - an in-running weekly average of 33%
The Select Pick dutching races gave one from two wins, Sunday, giving a successful dutching strike rate of 50% - an in-running weekly average of 50%

Doncaster Daydreamer
After serving up herb-roasted Aberdeenshire sirloin on Wednesday, Thursday's ratings served up a stringy Pot Noodle - without the grainy gravy. The handicap ratings held up best. But the (4) and (5) graded races dipped in performance.
On Thurday, Ogee (2-30 Bangor-On-Dee) can show his class on his first chase and hold off the equally classy King's Forest and the lowly weighted R De Rien Sivola who has yet to reach her full potential.
At Doncaster, Castles In The Air (3-50) has hit top form at the right time and may have enough in the finish to hold off a resurgent Jimmy Styles.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Thursday was 62% following Wednesday's 71%, Tuesday's 71% Monday's low 59% and Sunday's 71% - an in-running weekly average of just over 66%

Wednesday, 9 September 2009
Another fairly good Wednesday for our main handicap ratings and the (4) and (5) graded races - but the speed ratings are still struggling - despite having a joint 3rd top 66/1 winner.
On Wednesday Taajub (3-10 Doncaster) will be a very short price and will no doubt tempt exchange layers. But he has a lot of class and this race has been noted for top class 2-Y-O winners. So, I would tread carefully.
Fantasia (4-50 Doncaster) seems only to have the progressive Shamwari Lodge to fear, so the race looks a very good dutch race - depending, of course on whether the "Fallon Factor" returns for the favourite.
At Chepstow, it will be disappointing if Gift Horse (3-30) doesn't win off a very low claiming mark
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Wednesday was 71% following Tuesday's 71% Monday's low 59% and Sunday's 71% - an in-running weekly average of 68%

There are never more than four horses in the top three (in either service) in any race where there are either joint 2nd or joint third tops.
If a horse isn't in the top three rated of the handicaps or the speed ratings, then it is highly likely it won't win.
