This week's good start continued, Monday, with all the services doing well - though again the speed ratings need to find better consistency. I'll be reviewing them all this week.
Tuesday looks a better quality day overall than Monday's 48 races, and there are a few nice horses running.
Tawaabb (4-00 Ripon) is a good 2-Y-O but was a little overfaced in the 6f July Stakes last time. This return to 5f and the drop in class should be enough to see him win. His trainer's juveniles are running well, lately.
On a lesser level (but also at the dreaded Ripon) I am loathe to desert Kylladdie (3-00). There are a few improving types in the race but he should at least place. He has a pound or two in hand of the well fancied Gillburg on their Haydock running, plus he will be more suited to the slightly easier ground than he met there. One massive advantage is that he is a course and distance winner.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Monday was 75% following Sunday's a very high 90% -- an in-running weekly average of 82.5%.
There were eight from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Monday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 80% following Sunday's 75% -- an in-running weekly average of 77.5%.
The full top three summary for Monday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Monday was 50% following Sunday's 50% -- an in-running weekly average of 50%.
HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 29%. Best top rated SP was 17/2
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 63%. Best 2nd top SP was 12/1
Top three strike rate was 73%. Best 3rd top SP was 7/1
SPEED RATINGS
Clear top rated strike rate was 19%. Best top rated SP was 12/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 42%. Best 2nd top SP was 11/1
Top three strike rate was 52%. Best 3rd top SP was 5/1
note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services). There are never more than three horses (in either service) in the top two in any race where there are joint 2nd tops (one top rated two joint 2nd top). There are never more than four horses in the top three (in either service) in any race where there are either joint 2nd or joint third tops.
If a horse isn't in the top three rated of the handicaps or the speed ratings, then it is highly likely it won't win.

A very good start to the week, Sunday, with all the services doing well - though the speed ratings need to find better consistency.
Monday has a massive amount of inconsistent horses and a couple of good, highly competitive handicaps on show this Bank Holiday Monday. It's hard to know where to start finding a bet or two.
My eyes were first drawn to Igoyougo (5-10 Newcastle) but his SP will probably be prohibitive given it's a handicap and there is one massive danger. So I'll leave that as a dutch bet for subscribers.
Chepstow and Warwick look tough and I will be leaving those meetings alone for the day.
Depending on the strength of Indy Driver, Golden Button (5-30 Epsom) looks a likely winner. If she falls below 6/4 (which is likely) then I will leave her alone.
Layali Al Andalus was so impressive last time out that many will scramble to bet him tomorrow (Newcastle 4-00). It seems evident (to me, at least) that he is going to progress well beyond this level next season. But on Monday he might have to play second fiddle to his stable companion, Whippers Love, who has the advantage of being proven over this mile trip. One mile is a long way for 2-Y-O's and Whippers Love won very cosily over the trip last time in the manner of a horse to follow until beaten. I'll have two bets in the race: win on Whippers Love and a reverse forecast with Layali Al Andalus.

The week ended the way it should have started. The ratings picked up significantly with some good priced winners - and the (4) and (5) graded races showed some improvement to almost perform the way they normally do. But the latter's better performance couldn't quite raise the percentages up to normal standards. Onwards to a new week.
On Sunday I will be having a small wager on Signor Peltro (5-05 Goodwood) hoping he continues his good form over a track he has coped well with in the past. I shall also be keeping a close eye on South Cape in this race. He is 4lbs out of the handicap but still well handicapped on his best form of last season. He ran as though running into some form last time out, fading slowly in the final furlong. Many race watchers will have noted him down after that run.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Saturday was 72% following Friday's 62%, Thursday's 65%, Wednesday's 75%, Tuesday's 75%, Monday's 81% and Sunday's 76% -- a final weekly average of an acceptable 72.3%

Storm the Bullet
The subdued week results-wise continued, Friday. Although the combined ratings held up reasonably well and provided a couple or three big priced winners, overall both sets of ratings were poor, and the top rates of the (4) and (5) graded races continued on a low end percentage.
Saturday looks fierce as usual. On the website we recommend a limited battle with the bookie on Saturday's. Tomorrow's cards vividly portray why we advise cutting back on bets. Highly competitive small fields and almost impossible big field handicaps are the norm. An extension would be to highly recommend you limit to virtually zero all your bets in such low grade handicaps as those supplied by Redcar on Saturday. I'd rather eat a raw porcupine than play those races....
I restrict my blog selections to just two horses. Legal Legacy (each way) in Newmarket's 2-20 and Noble Storm in the Beverley Bullet (3-35).
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Friday was 62% following Thursday's 65%, Wednesday's 75%, Tuesday's 75%, Monday's 81% and Sunday's 76% -- an in-running weekly average of 72.3%

Hot Ffos Las
There's no denying that although the combined ratings held up fairly well, Thursday was a poor day overall.
There's a very good card at Ffos Las on Friday but it looks fiercely competitive. The Irish seem to have a very strong hand in virtually every race and will probably come away with a winner or two - Hot Oscar (4-55) probably being their premier hope.
Elswhere, it is just as competitive. Get Carter (5-10 Newmarket) is on a roll and should complete the three timer. And Kylladdie can continue the upward curve he is on in Hamilton's 5-30. Ginger Ted is a big danger but not big enough for me to desert Kylladdie

Watch For The Prince
Once again the combined ratings did well, Wednesday, but again individually they were a bit messy -- though there was a handicap clear top rated (speed 2nd rated) winner at 14/1, and the (4) and (5) graded races showed some improvement overall.
Thursday continues the week's low grade theme with yet more inconsistent horse's being the main types.
As for horses to tempt me into the bookies lair, I will be closely watching the market in Ayr's 2-40 race. If any significant money comes in for Prince Rhyddarch I will be taking the hint -- despite top weight. This is his ground and his class. He has almost exclusively raced at Hamilton but he has won at Newcastle which is a similarly galloping track, albeit a bit more testing, to Ayr.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Wednesday was 75% following Tuesday's 75%, Monday's 81% and Sunday's 76% -- an in-running weekly average of 76.5%
There were three from four successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Wednesday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 75% following Tuesday's 50%, Monday's 50% and Sunday's 67% -- an in-running weekly average of 60.5%
The full top three summary for Wednesday:

Tuesday, 25 August 2009
Though the combined ratings did well, Tuesday, individually they were a bit messy and the (4) and (5) graded races seem stuck in an average quagmire.
Overall, Wednesday's cards look no better than Monday's or Tuesday's, with a huge amount of inconsistent horses plying their lowly trade. A couple of the more consistent types interest me, though. Both have excuses for some defeats and have thus hidden their true modest best.
Spiders Star (3-20 Catterick) hasn't really enjoyed much luck the last twice and should have finished much closer to the winner both times. He is still in good form (and may still be progressing) and has winning experience over the course and distance. Casual Garcia, Harcas and Abstract Folly will have their supporters so a value price of 3/1 would make him an acceptable risk.
Scrapper Smith (5-10 Ayr) is improving and ran quite a lot better than his final position indicates last time. His trainer reckons he needs give in the ground and he has it tomorrow. This is a weaker race than he won (or the one he in which ran sixth of nine last time) so he won't necessarily have needed to improve to win this race. Residency and Miss Pusey Street are the obvious dangers.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Tuesday was 75% following Monday's 81% and Sunday's 76% -- an in-running weekly average of 77.3%
There were two from four successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Tuesday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 50% following Monday's 50% and Sunday's 67% -- an in-running weekly average of 56.7%
The full top three summary for Tuesday:

Wall To Wall Racing Is Over
The summer wall-to-wall racing is coming to an end and, apart from Saturday's and a couple of days a month, there will be between two and four race meetings a day. As for the performances on Monday: the Handicap ratings performed well but the Speed ratings and the (4) and (5) graded races again performed averagely.
Only two cards on Tuesday and neither make my mouth water. I have no firm thoughts about anything.

A good start to the week with both sets of ratings matching themselves but the Speed Ratings just edging it with two good 2nd top rated wins at 22/1 (Mouseen) and 20/1 (Odddsmaker). The (4) and (5) graded races put up an average performance.
Looking at Monday's cards makes me wonder what is the point of Kempton? Answers please.....
Elsewhere it is typical Monday fare with a lot of inconsistent horses, some wide open maidens and a couple of (supposedly) good things at short prices. Serious Impact (4-30 Windsor) and Laughing Boy (5-00 Windsor) are two such but both come with risks. Serious Impact hasn't run since May and Emperor Court could be given a soft lead he won't give up. And Laughing Boy isn't bombproof from an improver or the debutante, Zemario. Having said that, I expect them both to win -- but be wary of any market moves against either.
Another you would expect would be Pure Nostalgia (2-20 Hamilton) if the meeting goes ahead after an early morning inspection. Claimers aren't usually races to be bullish about, but Pure Nostalgia looks the only horse least likely to regress below his current ability. So he goes off as my best bet of the day.

A fair end to the week with the top rated of the (4) and (5) races once again reaching a weekly strike rate of 40%.
Nothing appeals overnight for Sunday. I may have a closer look at Grandad Bill and Northern Flyer but I'm not overly hooked on them.

A good week for the blog selections at York with three winners from four selections at 3/1, 8/1, 5/2 -- the only loser being pipped in the shadow of the post.
The handicap ratings have held up well but the speed ratings again underperformed, Friday, though they did give a clear 2nd top 20/1 winner (Rose Row 8-15 Wolverhampton).
Ripon usually sends shivers down my spine when considering a bet there. The course rides like corrugated wood and not totally reliable form-wise. But Red Cape (4-35, Ripon) has tempted me to take the plunge. His trainer, Ruth Carr, has exceeded all expectations this season after taking over her grandfather's stable (DW Chapman) and has kept this horse sweet all year. He gamely held on to win over this course two runs back and she was disappointed he failed to make the cut for the Great St Wilfred. I have been told she is keen on his chances, Saturday. Expect him to lead from the gate. Johannes is the obvious danger.
Antinori (3-15 Sandown) is not a horse for the faint-hearted and is tried in cheekpieces tomorrow in the hope it will give him better concentration and a little extra courage. He's run some fine races in similar company but has always been a little reticent at the business end of his races. The only time he showed his true ability was when he made all at this track two runs ago. There are a couple of others he may have to fight to get the lead (primarily Australia Day) but at the overnight 12/1 and 14/1 it is worth chancing he can hold on for a place tomorrow. A small each way bet seems in order.

Swing To Victory
The ratings recovered well, Thursday and came back to near normality, the highlight being the blog selection Roaring Forte which was also top rated both on form and time.
On Friday, Swingkeel (4-40 York) is another blog selection on a recovery mission after a defeat. A lot of pundits claim that he would have been much closer last time when 3rd at Goodwood had he begun his run earlier. I'm not so sure. He was staying on last time, but much more slowly than he had in the past. My opinion (for what it's worth) is that Swingkeel ran a great race at a distance just that little bit too far. It is a credit to his courage that he slowly bridged the gap when he had very little left to give. Friday's two mile trip is his optimum and he can show more of his true grit to gain the day here.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Thursday was 73% following Wednesday's 65%, Tuesday's 69%, Monday's 88% and Sunday's 76% -- an in-running weekly average of just over 74% .
There were ten from twelve successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Thursday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 83% following Wednesday's 64%, Tuesday's 60%, Monday's 40% and Sunday's 50% -- an in running weekly average of just over 59%.
The full top three summary for Thursday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Thursday was 50% following Wednesday's 45%, Tuesday's 20%, Monday's 40% and Sunday's 50% -- -- an in running weekly average of just under 41%
HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 30%. Best top rated SP was 9/1

note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services).

Roaring In The Four
A below par day overall for the ratings and the Speed ratings again underperformed. They are being monitored and improved as I write.
Shamwari Lodge won well, Wednesday and looks a horse to follow while the ground rides fast.
On Thursday, Roaring Forte (2-50 York) looks to bounce back from an indifferent display at Goodwood. But that sharp, undulating 7f was totally unsuitable and he should be more at home over York's flatter mile. His lack lustre Goodwood run should ensure he starts at a tempting each -way price. He should get in the four.
Admin (3-15 Lingfield) is officially our first nursery handicap bet of the season. It's week or so earlier than the time of year we usually take the nursery plunge (and on the dreaded All Weather to boot), but he looks good here. Brambleberry will be popular after his good win here last week, but Admin's form stacks up well and he should take advantage of the 6lb he gets from that horse.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Wednesday was 65% following Tuesday's 69%, Monday's 88% and Sunday's 76% -- an in-running weekly average of just over 74% .
There were seven from eleven successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Wednesday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 64% following Tuesday's 60%, Monday's 40% and Sunday's 50% -- an in running weekly average of just over 53%.

Shamwari Lodge (4-40 York) has run some superb races this season and, despite top weight, looks to have found a winning opportunity, Wednesday. She is unbeaten on genuine fast ground and her running style suggests she will be well suited by the mile trip. A market watch is advisable but, as things stand, she carries my money with just as much confidence as I had in the narrowly beaten Hamish McGonagall on Tuesday.
Have a good day.

Though Hamish McGonagall has appeared a professional loser to some this season, he has run some very game races in defeat and hardly shifted in the handicap. The 1-45 at York looks to be an ideal race for a horse who can't quite last out 6f. The specialist 5.5f may be just what he wants and he carries my money with a certain amount of confidence on a very suitable track for his style of running.

The Exacta Has Landed
A satisfactory end to the week, Saturday. The handicap ratings got the exacta in the Great St Wilfred (Markab/Tamagin) for a return of £76.60 and the (4) and (5) graded dutch races had only one losing bet.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Saturday was 75% following Friday's 80%, Thursday's 62%, Wednesday's 63%, Tuesday's 69%, Monday's 72% and Sunday's 84% (only three races failed to yield a top three winner) - an final weekly average of just over 72%
There were eight from nine successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Saturday, giving a winning top two strike rate of 89% following Friday's 90%, Thursday's 77%, Wednesday's 71% , Tuesday's low 28%, Monday's 71% and Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 65.5% (There was an error in yesterday's tally. The in running weekly average was 61% and not 67% as shown.)
The full top three summary for Friday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Saturday was another low 22% following Friday's low 20%, Thursday's 67%, Wednesday's 43%, Tuesday's poor 14% (one long odds on winner), Monday's 71% and Sunday's 0% (no wins) - an in-running weekly average of 33.8% which was surprisingly high considering the top rated performed poorly four out of the seven days -- an indication of the underlying strength of the selections.

A good day all round, Friday, except for the fact that the top rated of the (4) and (5) graded races dipped in performance.
The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Friday was 80% following Thursday's 62%, Wednesday's 63%, Tuesday's 69%, Monday's 72% and Sunday's 84% (only three races failed to yield a top three winner) - an in-running weekly average of just over 71%
There were nine from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Friday giving a winning top two strike rate of 90% following Thursday's 77%, Wednesday's 71% , Tuesday's low 28%, Monday's 71% and Sunday's 33% - an in-running weekly average of 67%
The full top three summary for Friday:
The clear top rated winning strike rate of the (4) and (5) graded races Friday was just 20% following Thursday's 67%, Wednesday's 43%, Tuesday's poor 14% (one long odds on winner), Monday's 71% and Sunday's 0% (no wins) - an in-running weekly average of a disappointing 36% .
HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 33%. Best top rated SP was 9/2
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 63%. Best 2nd top SP was 11/2
Top three strike rate was 80%. Best 3rd top SP was 12/1
SPEED RATINGS
Clear top rated strike rate was 25%. Best top rated SP was 9/2
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 55%. Best 2nd top SP was 12/1
Top three strike rate was 58%. Best 3rd top SP was 7/2
note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services).

Saturday is its usual competitive self. The highlight is Newbury's Group 2 Hungerford Stakes (3-10), which is surely the opportunity for Evasive to get his first 2009 win. The main danger as I see it is the hugely improving Border Patrol.
The annual Ripon stampede goes at 3-55 and is not a race for the faint hearted. Second top Speed Rated Skhilling Spirit will be a danger to all if he decides to come out of the traps. David Barron has a fantastic record in this race and will have been easing him along to keep him as fresh as possible. You will know your fate with this horse as soon as the stalls open. He has a low draw and, if low draws become the best draws, Tamagin will be hard to peg back from box 2.
There are loads of horses with a chance but I can't overlook the races the handicap top rated Markab has run in this season's two major sprint handicaps. He looks good enough to carry my money -- with Skhillig Spirit a dangerous looking each way saver.
Be careful out there, Saturday.
