Bin Beckons For The Stewards Cup

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Friday was 74% following Thursday's meagre 66%, Wednesday's 72%, Tuesday's 76%, Monday's 65% and Sunday's 70% -- an in running weekly average of 70.5%.

There were again seven from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Friday giving a 70% winning top two strike rate following Thursday's 70%, Wednesday's 40%, Tuesday's 80%, Monday's 71% and Sunday's 65% -- an in running weekly average of 66%. The clear top rated winning strike rate, Friday, was 40% following Thursday's 50%, Wednesday's low 20%, Tuesday's 70%, Monday's 57% and Sunday's 33% -- an in running weekly clear top rated strike rate of 45%.

The full top three summary for Friday:

HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 29%. Best top rated SP was 7/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 55%. Best 2nd top SP was 11/1
Top three strike rate was 61%. Best 3rd top SP was 9/2

SPEED RATINGS
Clear top rated strike rate was 26%. Best top rated SP was 7/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 37%. Best 2nd top SP was 9/1
Top three strike rate was 55%. Best 3rd top SP was 11/1
note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services). There are never more than three horses (in either service) in the top two in any race where there are joint 2nd tops (one top rated two joint 2nd top). There are never more than four horses in the top three (in either service) in any race where there are either joint 2nd or joint third tops.

If a horse isn't in the top three rated of the handicaps or the speed ratings, then it is highly likely it won't win.

Our poor July blog selection record ended on the last day of the month with two winners. Hopefully, August will provide better results.

According to the Met Office, Goodwood can expect a night long of light rain. If that comes to pass, then the dead ground (as decribed by Jimmy Fortune) will not get any faster. Just as Biniou (3-40 Stewards Cup) will like it. He was a Listed winning, Group placed horse for most of his career in France and has taken a couple of years to recapture some of that form during his time in this country. But he has done so with a vengeance this summer. He has recaptured his French form and looks very handily weighted with just a 3lbs penalty for his last to first win at Newmarket a fortnight ago. The race will definitely be run to suit and he should be making his ground rapidly in the closing stages.

The bonus is that Goodwood specialist Richard Hughes takes over from Jamie Spencer. Since he is still 25/1 with Victor Chandler and Ladbrokes overnight, he surely merits an each way interest.

La Capriosa (2-05 Doncaster) did us a favour last Sunday by stopping just quickly enough to let the blog selection, Hotham, pip her on the line. Saturday's race is not nearly so competitive and she should gain deserved compensation. Robert Winston who rides her so well (and no, I'm not going to rephrase that...) retains the ride.

The most interesting horse of the day is Sir Michael Stoute's Zacinto (2-30 Goodwood). He looked a potential top tier horse in his two runs last season and, providing he has overcome his training problems, he should prove too good for a field made up essentially of third tier horses.

Have a good Saturday

Rob The Bookies, Friday (not literally, of course).

A reasonable day, Thursday. The Handicap Ratings dipped slightly in performance but the speed ratings bounced back by outperforming the handicaps - that's twice in one week which is an unusual event. The speed ratings produced a remarkable 40% clear top rated win ratio in the process. The (4) and (5) graded races got over Wednesday's bump to recover well.

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Thursday was only 66% which followed Wednesday's 72%, Tuesday's 76%, Monday's 65% and Sunday's 70% -- an in running weekly average of just under 70%.

There were seven from ten successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Thursday giving a 70% winning top two strike rate following Wednesday's 40%, Tuesday's 80%, Monday's 71% and Sunday's 65% -- an in running weekly average of just over 65%. The clear top rated winning strike rate was 50% following Wednesday's low 20%, Tuesday's 70%, Monday's 57% and Sunday's 33% -- an in running weekly clear top rated strike rate of 46%.

July has been one of those months for the blog selection-wise. These losing runs always come to an end - hopefully on the last July day.

Dick Turpin (4-00 Goodwood) has -- using the cliche -- looked the real Mcoy in his two outings and has not really been extended. Goodwood is the ideal track for him even at this very early stage of his career. Rakaan would already be a winner had he not backed out of a couple of battles, which leaves Showcasing as the improving horse most likely to cause Dick most problems - if he has any Friday.

Both we and the official handicapper agree that Kaptain Kirkup is the best horse in Haydock's 7-20 Nursery. We usually try to catch the handicapper out with our own handicaps but may have failed here. The Kaptain is still improving and the only danger seems to be the ground conditions on the night. I don't think further rain will inconvenience him.

Have a good day.

Alpen Hedge

A strange day, Wednesday with an excellent afternoon (four clear top and two joint 2nd top wins at Goodwood) and an erratic evening. The Handicap Ratings held up well providing a 40% clear top rated win strike rate but the speed ratings underperformed - though they provided a 20/1 3rd top rated winner (Just Sam), and the (4) and (5) graded races hit a bump.

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Wednesday was 72% following Tuesday's 76%, Monday's 65% and Sunday's 70% -- an in running weekly average of just under 71%.

There were two from just five successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Wednesday, giving a 40% winning top two strike rate following Tuesday's 80%, Monday's 71% and Sunday's 65% -- an in running weekly average of 64%. The clear top rated winning strike rate was a low 20% Wednesday (one from five) following Tuesday's 70%, Monday's 57% and Sunday's 33% -- an in running weekly clear top rated strike rate of 45%.

Infiraad (4-35 Goodwood) has promised to be a Group 3 sprinter in the past and should run at least a place in this very competitive handicap.

Mirrored (2-10 Goodwood) looks likely to benefit from the step up in distance in a race where I think Alpen Glen should prove best of Mark Johnston's trio and reward an each way hedge bet.

Have a good day.

Sir Mark Prescott paid a lot of money for Braveheart Moveas a yearling and will hope the horse is going to turn out better than an 86 rated handicapper. Though he has a St Leger entry, I see this race (4-00 Goodwood, Wednesday) more of a sighter for York's Ebor handicap in August - a course that will play to his strengths. He is a beautifully constructed horse and the Goodwood twists, turns and undulations shouldn't bother him too much. He looks very good off his current mark.

Have a good day.

Goodwood starts, Tuesday.

Main Aim should continue on the up in the 3-25.

Richard Hughes is a canny rider round Goodwood and should get normal front runner Australia Day (2-10) into a good position from a bad draw to reward an each way bet.

And Wellington Square (5-10) should get the furious gallop he needs to be seen at his best.

Have a good day.

Clement Windsor

First let me apologise to the many of you who registered or emailed for our one week free trial today (Sunday). The delay in answering your registration/emails was simply because we made a snap decision to visit our local Pontefract meeting. We were, therefore, both late in replying to emails and in completing the ratings for Monday.

You should all now have received your confirmations and should be able to log on to the ratings and Select page on site using either the log in details you registered or the ones we supplied. If you haven't yet received your confirmation, you will do so before tomorrow morning (Monday AM).

Sister Clement (7-45 Windsor) has looked a different filly since being sent to Richard Hannon and being dropped to sprint distances. She won so well last time that a 9lbs rise in the weights looks unlikely to stop her.

Hot Ponte

There is no denying that both sets of ratings were severely short of being satisfactory on Saturday. There was a sharp drop in performance on a very competitive day and there are no excuses. But the weekly averages held up well overall.

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Saturday was a very low 55% following Friday's 82%, Thursday's 75%, Wednesday's 75%, Tuesday's 71%, Monday's 75% and Sunday's 69% -- a final weekly average of 71%.

There were four from eight successful (4) and (5) UK graded races, Saturday -- a 50% winning top two strike rate following Friday's 91% winning top two strike rate (there were five clear top rated winners) Thursday's 100%, Wednesday's 87.5%, Tuesday's 57%, Monday's 50% and Sunday's 40% - a final weekly average of 68% winning top two strike rate -- achieved despite a poor start and end to the week.

I was initially going to have just one bet Sunday (the dutch I have sent subscribers), but I would hate to miss Hotham (5-30 Pontefract) who has been out of the first three only once at the course and who is getting back to his best form. Since he is being ridden by a Fahey apprentice (won on Knot In Wood, Saturday) I will have a small interest .

Have a relaxing Sunday

Saturday has a lot of quality horse racing headlined by Ascot's King George at 4-25. Michael Stoute and Aidan O'Brien may trade places for a day as I expect the Stoute horses to dominate the finish. I envisage a Conduit/Tartan Bearer one-two.

Taqdeyr looks a very interesting horse for Ascot's 3-50 Heritage handicap. He's rated only fifth on form and third on time but he represents good each way value. I expect Secret Society, Roaring Forte, and Captain Brilliance to fight out the finish with Crackdown and Taqdeyr racing wide of those three and heavily involved in the closing stages. At 16/1 overnight (18/1 in places), I think Taqdeyr is worth a small interest.

On Saturday night at Lingfield (Turf), Kuanyao should make light of the 7lbs punishment the handicapper meted out for his easy handicap debut win at Salisbury earlier this month. That could turn out to be lenient because, of those he easily beat, three have come out and won (Sister Clement, Fyelehk and Eye For The Girls) and the other two horses in the first six that day subsequently ran a good second (Vamos) and a close up fourth (Ponting). Kuanyao looks the best bet of the day - despite the fact that The Scorching Wind is expected to run much better than he did last time.

Have a profitable Saturday.

And Colonel Mak has the form and speed figures to beat off Hairspray in Newmarket's 7-10.

Though Russian Spirit (6/4) failed to hold off Ursula (7/1) yesterday, the three horses mentioned (the other being Merry Diva 11/1) produced a nice winning tricast of £122.35 ............ I must be hitting form.

Marvollous Wednesday

Unusually, the Speed Ratings comprehensively outperformed the Handicap Ratings.

We always advise subscribers to seriously consider each way bets on highly forecast priced horses that are high in the ratings. It is an area where they can obtain huge value. Many such horses not only place at a big SP, they also win. Today the Speed Ratings stunningly confirmed this by providing a third top rated speed winner at 100/1 (Tenormore 7-30 Bangor-On-Dee).

Despite being 6lbs out of the handicap, Tanmeya (4-40 Worcester) may still be ahead of the handicapper and should follow up her recent win.

Marvo (8-15 Sandown) looks to have a stiff task on his all time high handicap mark. But his racing style indicates he is the type to continue causing the handicapper problems. The going shouldn't present any problem and he could very well complete the hat-trick.

On Monday, Burns Night (8-30 Beverley) should reverse placings with Desire to Excel - though Splinter Cell looks the more likely danger.

The 4-30 Heritage handicap at Ayr looks ultra competitive. Of the top two or three rated horses, Blue Jack (highly rated on both form and time) looks the one likely to reward an each way interest. He's improved significantly with blinkers and looks well capable of making another step forward from a fairly good draw.

On Sunday the cards are generally what the polite would call dross from a betting perspective. But Bathwick Man (Stratford 2-10) and Choumakeur (3-00 Newton Abbot) seem to be two horses improving faster than the handicapper has been able to catch them up. Though their prices will likely reflect that, they are worthy of betting simply because there doesn't seem to be anything remotely solid (except, of course, for long odd on Classic Swain). I will be having one other bet, a dutch, in the last at Stratford. Unfortunately, only subscribers are privvy to the precise dutch bet.

Have a good day.

So far as I can see Blue Monday (3-55 Newbury) has quite a few things going for him tomorrow. He always runs well on his seasonal debut, he runs well on the expected ground, he has never been out of the first two in four runs at Newbury and his trainer's horses have begun to show a little bit of form. That's enough ticked boxes for me.

Last winter, Picaroon (3-10 Market Rasen) struck me as a progressive hurdler to watch out for in the 2009/10 NH season. He is starting a bit earlier than I expected but seems to be reasonably weighted to make a winning re-appearance on Saturday. His trainer has been in good form and has a very good strike rate in Market Rasen hurdles. I am sure he'll turn up as race fit as he can be. He shouldn't be inconvenienced by extra rainfall overnight.

My usual each way fun bet on Saturday is Schoolboy Champ (Super Sprint Newbury 3-25). I have always been a fan of small trainers who produce impressive debut winning 2-Y-O's. Patrick Morris and this horse fit that category. The bare form of his win can be crabbed because those he beat have done nothing to advertise the form to any degree. But he won easily in a very good time for the class of race. He's also drawn on the far side which, I have seen written, has traditionally been the place not to be in this race. But, looking at recent results, that is not borne out: Senor Mirasol only just failed to win from the same stall last year and both Lady Livius and If Paradise won this from stall one. Admittedly, the Super Sprint can be one for the pinstickers. But I am satisfied where my pin has landed.

Have a good day

If you're a subscriber to TowerForm, you probably know why there was no blog yesterday. For non subscribers, it was because of computer problems which weren't solved completely until well past midnight. The problems didn't affect our ratings services, just our sanity.

Showcasing (3-10 Newbury) would have been the bet of the day, Friday, but unfortunately, he may be odds on. If odds against show (he is evens with Paddy Power overnight) I will be betting him.

Sudden Impact has suddenly improved for the addition of an eye-shield and seems to have been found a good opportunity in Haydock's 3-30. Liberty Ship looks a decent dutching partner.

Have a good day.

For some unknown reason the blog selections have been very seriously lacking. It is a clear indication that losing runs can occur when you least expect them. The trick (as I have said before) is not to get too deeply disappointed and ride the storm. Things always improve - as I told me friend Shaun the other day.

My own betting has not been adversely affected which makes me confident the blog selections will improve. It's simply a matter of trying to chose more of my winners than losers. Sods Law affects us all sometimes...

And so to Wednesday's generally less than inspiring race cards:

Catterick's 3-30 sprint is going to be very fast and extremely furious which should lead to a strong finisher coming out on top. Though her wins have been over 6f, the improving Real Diamond could be let in by the expected strong pace over the fast 5f. I expect her to be slighty outpaced early but I also expect the leaders to falter in the final furlong thus allowing her to gain the upper hand in the closing stages.

Have a good day.

Take Notice

All I will say about yesterday's each way selection is that some horses are not sent to win races. Lyceana was ridden as though she was being either educated or "looked after". But she has had six runs previously so didn't want educating. So she must have been looked after. If the latter is the case she should never have run. I watch future runs with interest - especially if she is stepped up in distance with a protected handicap mark.

I can't say the ratings were very good on an strange day. I am beginning to wonder about something once said to me about horses and weather. The theory is that some horses are adversely affected not by the physical weather, more by the sudden barometric change in the atmosphere. Interesting though that is, I can't quite wrap my head around the theory.

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Monday was a meagre 56.5% following Sunday's 67%, an in running weekly average of 61.75%.

The (4) and (5) UK graded races held up well, though, Monday, giving a 100% top two success rate. Two were won by the clear top rated horse and two were won by 2nd top - one of them joint 2nd top.

There has been a lot of notice given to Henry Cecil's Notice Given (6-20 Yarmouth) on the gallops and he's expected to win first time up.

Coconut Shy (7-40 Southwell) would be a big disappointment if she proved incapable of winning a claimer at Southwell. The only worry is that horses are placed in this sort of race for valid reasons and she has been put in for £14,000. Swiss Art looks the most likely forecast companion.

Michael Jarvis doesn't usually keep 4-Y-Os and older if they seem unlikely to provide a few wins, which makes Lyceana a very interesting runner in Windsor's 8-30 fillies handicap. In her seasonal debut race against the highly progressive Cosmopolitan, she wasn't punished when her chance had gone and looked all the world like a horse getting ready to win.

Though it looks a very tight race (there are a couple or three promising fillies in the race), there is no Cosmopolitan in opposition. Added to my confidence are the facts that Michael Jarvis has a high strike rate with 4-Y-Os at the course and has won this race twice in the last four years. It seems this race has been specifically targetted.

If she maintains an 8/1 or higher SP, then she looks an each way bet to nothing (she is 9/1 overnight on Oddschecker).

Have a good day.

Saturday's Secrets

I have replied to the comment in yesterday's Globeform posting.

Apologies for yesterday's lack of update. Several issues prevented my posting a blog. Nothing dramatic happened. It was simply that Thursday's hours ran well into Friday's and I couldn't quite find enough time to post. It is a rare event - except for Sunday's racing. So it shouldn't happen too frequently in the future. I'll do a quick summary for Thursday's and Friday's results.

On Saturday the racing is a fiercely competitive as usual with some tight non handicaps and wide open handicaps.

It seems the draw has eroded the chances of my early John Smith's Cup fancy, Moonquake (3-10 York)who will occupy the widest stall of all (22). So I will leave that race alone. I'm not usually fazed by draw bias, but the high draw over this trip has never been ideal.

Dick Turpin (6-20 Salisbury) impressed me a lot when he won his debut with ease. The only thing that would stop me betting him would be if he went lower than evens.

If Secret Society (1-50 Ascot) hasn't left his form behind at Royal Ascot after his good but hard run there, he should be able to take this race from a host of progressive horses.

My each way play on Saturday is Esoterica (2-35 York). His last run can be ignored as he didn't appear suited to Chester's tight track. He is 8lbs higher than his last win two runs ago at Ayr where he beat a subsequent winner (himself raised 6lbs for that subsequent win) with a fair amount of ease so the 8lbs rise shouldn't hinder him too much. On overall form he has to produce a career best to win. But his trainer has got such a tune out of him this season, he obviously thinks the headgear the horse has worn for all his wins is now not needed (the intimation here being that I certainly hope his trainer isn't discarding them to help him get his handicap mark reduced....... Surely, he wouldn't be that obvious.). Notwithstanding that possibility, though, he should be there at the end and certainly warrants each way interest.

Have a lucky Saturday

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Wednesday was a very average 59% following Tuesday's 67%, Monday's 74% and Sunday's 84%, an in-running weekly average of 71%.

Epsom Salts (7-25 Epsom) was a long time turf maiden until he visited his namesake course last week. And the way he won made you wonder why he hadn't won on turf before. The course (where experience can be a big advantage) obviously suited him well. He looks good to follow up.

Old-timer, Fantasy Believer (9-00 Epsom) hasn't won for almost three years but he has become dangerously handicapped. He has shown some of his old ability this season - especially the last twice. Daryll Holland, who has won on him more than any other jockey, takes the mount and could well guide the old fella to a late pouncing win.

Have a good day.

The Handicap Ratings and Speed Ratings combined top three strike rate for Tuesday was 67% following Monday's was 74% and Sunday's 84%, an in-running weekly average of 75%.

There were just four (4) and (5) UK graded races, Tuesday producing a 75% top two winning strike rate. Two were won by the clear top rated horse and one was won by the joint 2nd top rated. One race was unsuccessful.

The full top three summary for Tuesday is:

HANDICAPS
Clear top rated strike rate was 28.5%. Best top rated SP was 5/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 43%. Best 2nd top SP was 10/1
Top three strike rate was 48%. Best 3rd top SP was 9/2

SPEED RATINGS
Clear top rated strike rate was 24%. Best top rated SP was 12/1
Top two strike rate (incl joints) was 48%. Best 2nd top SP was 12/1
Top three strike rate was 62%. Best 3rd top SP was 10/1

note: Unless there are overnight withdrawals there is always one clear top rated horse (in both services). There are never more than three horses in the top two in any race where there are joint 2nd tops (one top rated two joint 2nd top). There are never more than four horses in the top three in any race where there are either joint 2nd or joint third tops.

If a horse isn't in the top three rated of the handicaps or the speed ratings, then it is highly likely it won't win.

You can see an explanation of the Handicap Ratings HERE and an explanation of the Speed Ratings HERE. The Speed Ratings are an addition to the handicaps at no extra cost and you can subscribe HERE. There has never been a better time to join us.

Backing unlucky horses next time they run regardless of the race they contest is usually a charitable donation to a bookies next holiday. But Last Three Minutes (5-30 Newmarket) looks too good to miss. He was constantly blocked when making his run at York and when he got clear he absolutely flew. He is the type of unlucky horse it is worth taking a chance on.

Have a good day
